Philoptochos

We are an organization of Greek Orthodox men and women that supports the Church with charitable acts and enriches its members through their participation in Christ’s ministry.

Philoptochos was established in 1931 by the late Ecumenical Patriarch Athenagoras when he served North and South America as Archbishop. While its primary function is to serve the local parish, Philoptochos also extends and reaches out to other charities in the community in which it exists.

The word Philoptochos means “friend of the poor.” Philoptochos strives to help not only those who are in financial need, but those who are lonely, or in poor health.

On a national level, Philoptochos supports St. Basil Academy, Hellenic College-Holy Cross, the Patriarchate, IOCC, the Children’s Cardiac Fund and other charities. Locally, Philoptochos has contributed to such organizations as the Rescue Mission, Everywoman’s Place, Red Cross, Muskegon County Museum, and the Child Abuse Council.

We encourage you to join Philoptochos and share your talents and resources so that we may serve our Church and those who are in need.
